Sciatica
Springfield Sciatica Pain Relief at Cherry Health Center
The sciatic nerve is a group of nerve roots that begin between your spinal bones. These nerve roots join together and create the largest nerve in the body, which is the sciatic nerve. This nerve extends down from the low back under the buttock muscles and then all the way down the legs and feet. Sciatica is a term that is used to describe an irritation or pressure on the nerve, which is frequently caused by a herniated or bulging disc, which is also referred to as a ruptured disc, pinched nerve, or slipped disc, in the lumbar spine. This pressure or irritation normally leads to multiple symptoms that can include sharp, radiating pain, burning, and or numbness and tingling.
Normally, herniated or bulging discs are the cause of Sciatic. What happens is that the herniated material of the disc will apply pressure to the exiting nerve root producing the above symptoms. Sometimes degenerative disc disease, lateral canal stenosis, spondylolithesis, or central canal stenosis can cause this nerve compression as well. The problem is often diagnosed as a "radiculopathy", which means that one or more intervertebral discs have herniated or protruded from its normal position in the vertebral column and is applying pressure on the nerve root in the lower back. Sciatica occurs most often in people who are between the ages of 30 and 50. On many occasions this condition slowly develops because of general wear and tear on the structures of the discs and lower spine. Very rarely this requires a surgical procedure. The majority of people who experience sciatica are able to get pain relief with non-surgical treatments.
