Spinal Stenosis is just a fancy medical term for the closing off of the space in between your spinal vertebrae and your spinal cord. Two types of Stenosis normally happen when you have back pain or leg pain.

Stenosis can happen as a result of bone growing, also known as arthritis, or calcium bone spurs as frequently described. The bone grows out into your spinal cord and this causes inflammation and pressure on your spinal cord or it can even grow far enough out to actually press on your spinal cord causing tingling, weakness, back pain and numbness in your back, legs or feet.

Spinal Stenosis can also cause the narrowing of the space where your spinal cord passes through your spinal bones by disc material that is bulging, protruding or herniated and that presses on your spinal cord causing back pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in your back, legs or feet.

If it seems to be better when you are in the sitting position, and when you are walking or standing you start to develop pain that gets worse the longer you walk or stand, but is relieved to a degree by sitting and resting.... You may have spinal stenosis.
