Common Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common complaint. In fact, it’s so common that we often assume that aching knees are just something we’re supposed to live with. In reality, however, knee pain is not simply a normal part of aging. Fortunately, you can work toward a pain-free life and overcome chronic knee pain, but it’s important to understand the source of your pain.



Here are some of the more common reasons for knee pain:

Arthritis: There are are many different types of arthritis that can lead to knee and joint pain. This condition can be due to wear and tear or it can stem from autoimmune issues. Treating pain from arthritis starts by taking appropriate measures specific to the type of arthritis you have. The good news is that there are many treatment options that can dramatically improve your quality of life.

Meniscus problems: The meniscus is thick, rubbery cartilage that serves to absorb shock between your shin and thigh. It also plays an important role in knee stabilization. Your meniscus can be damaged and lead to knee pain. This is a treatable condition that doesn’t have to lead to chronic knee pain.

Knee bursitis: This condition is due to inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac near the knee joint. This can lead to pain and even limit your mobility. There are a range of treatments to reduce inflammation and pain due to bursitis.

Patellar tendinitis: Tendinitis is irritation and inflammation of a tendon, which is the fibrous tissue that connects muscles to bones. Patellar tendinitis refers to when this problem develops in the patellar tendon, which connects the quadriceps muscle to the shinbone. Runners, skiers, and cyclists are more at risk for developing this problem.

There are also a range of mechanical problems and simple injuries that can lead to knee pain. If not treated, these might become a chronic issue that impacts your quality. Fortunately, there are many options available to reduce pain, increase healing, and improve mobility.
