Exactly What Is a Sports Injury?

“Sports injury” is a common term, but have you ever wondered exactly what type of injury officially goes into this category? After all, it seems like nearly any type of injury can be incurred while playing sports! Today we’re going to talk about what sports injuries are, how you can avoid them, and how you can heal from them.



Sports injuries really can be any injury that occurs during physical activity, but most often these types of injuries include damage to the musculoskeletal system. In terms of sports injuries this typically means muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and discs. Injuries such as muscle sprains, tendon tears, and disc damage are examples of common sports injuries.

Some injuries like these are acute, meaning they happen suddenly during the activity.

Other sports injuries are chronic, occurring over months or even years of use. An acute injury can actually become a chronic injury if it doesn’t heal properly or is prone to additional injury even after it has healed. Both types of injuries can put you on the sidelines!

Preventing these injuries before they happen should always be the goal. Taking measures like stretching and warming up before any activity is a good first step. Making sure you get properly trained before engaging in sports activities and that you observe all safety measures is also important. Remember, it takes far more time to recover from an injury than it does to prevent one!

Typically, ice is the best option immediately following an injury. So if you’ve been hurt, put ice or a cold pack in a towel and apply it to the injured area. You can repeat this throughout the day to reduce swelling and pain. If the injury is severe, very painful, or creates mobility difficulties, it’s important that you seek medical attention. Not only can this reduce the severity of the injury, it can reduce recovery time as well.
