Exactly What Is Chronic Pain?

Many people struggle with pain issues, from tension headaches to backaches. In fact, most people complain of aches and pains on a fairly regular basis. At what point, however, does the pain you feel count as a chronic issue?

Chronic pain has several medical definitions based on the source and type of pain. At its most basic level, it simply refers to pain that persists for a long time or reoccurs consistently. For our conversation today we’re going to look at what chronic pain is and what causes it in the first place.

When you have pain that lasts over a period of months or even years, you’re dealing with a chronic pain situation. This is true even if you have periods that are relatively pain free. This type of pain takes not only a physical toll, but has a mental impact as well.

There are many issues that can lead to pain such as this, including past injuries that haven’t healed and issues such as:

  • Back problems

  • Migraines and other headaches

  • Arthritis

  • Nerve damage

  • Medical conditions such as Fibromyalgia

Chronic pain can manifest in any number of ways, and can range from mild to severe. Depending on the source of the pain, it might be a dull ache or soreness that never leaves or more intense pain. The pain may literally be something you feel every day or it may come and go. It’s important to recognize that even mild chronic pain can lead to a reduced standard of living and shouldn’t be ignored.

Over time, this type of pain can creep into other areas of your life, leading to insomnia, anxiety and depression. For this reason, it’s important to acknowledge chronic pain issues and look for ways to resolve it. The good news is that there are many options available to overcome these issues, no matter the source. If you or someone you love is living with chronic pain, we’d love to hear from you.
