Healthy Habits for a New Year

Unhealthy habits can cause high stress levels and wreak havoc on your health and well-being.  Here are some healthy habits to get your year off to a great start.

Get moving – Our bodies were not designed to live sedentary lives. Today’s work environments find us sitting more and moving less. Try to incorporate some of these movement ideas into your day:

  • Work from a standing position for at least a portion of the day or get up and walk around every 30-60 minutes.

  • Take a walk over your lunch break – even 15 minutes can provide a great mental break and physical boost.

  • Include 30 minutes of physical activity into each day.

  • Start or end your day with a stretch.

  • Play with your kids each day.

Sleep – Sleep is essential to your health. Try to go to bed and wake at the same time each day, even on the weekends. If you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, limit the amount of caffeine you have during the day. Create a calming atmosphere in your bedroom and start to eliminate distractions at least 30 minutes before bed so you are able to drift off more easily.

Eat Right – Reduce or eliminate processed food from your diet. Cut down on carbs and processed sugars and increase lean proteins, veggies, and fruits. In addition, start your day with a healthy breakfast.

Hydrate – Water helps flush toxins from your body, keeps skin healthy, nourishes your cells and organs, and keeps your mind alert.

Turn it off – Take time to step away from electronic distractions. While technology can be beneficial in our daily lives, taking a break can help us renew and center our focus. Consider setting aside one “device free” day a week.

Treat your body right – Don’t ignore those little aches and pains – they could be signs of more significant issues. Consider visiting a chiropractor for a holistic approach to health and healing. They can provide a variety of therapies and treatments, including physical therapy, spinal adjustments and decompression therapy, to help reduce or alleviate your symptoms.
