Pain Management Tips for the Holidays

The holidays are just around the corner, and for most people it’s both a magical and stressful time of the year. For those dealing with health issues, especially chronic pain, the extra work and stress of the holiday season can be problematic. If you’re looking for ways to minimize pain and enjoy the season more, these tips can help.

1. Take it easy – The holiday season tends to come with a hefty amount of extra work. From making Thanksgiving dinner to holiday shopping, most people find themselves with too much to do. If you’re dealing with pain, it’s important that you learn to take it easy. An easy place to start is by being mindful of overdoing it, like carrying too many bags of groceries or playing too enthusiastically with the grandchildren.

2. Schedule downtime – When you make a dentist appointment, you don’t do anything else with that time other than see your dentist. If you’re dealing with chronic pain, you should schedule downtime in much the same way. This “appointment” for downtime ensures that you get the rest you need. Just be sure not to let other obligations get in the way!

3. Ask for help – Many people have a hard time asking for help, but if you’re struggling with chronic pain, this is a mistake. The holidays are a time for family and friends, so know your limitations and ask others for help whenever possible.

4. Make an appointment – Few people understand your issues like your healthcare provider. So if you’re struggling with pain, make an appointment and talk to them about it. Remember, they are your advocate and can help you overcome your pain and get back to living.

If you’re tired of living with chronic pain, but don’t have a trusted healthcare provider, just contact us and tell us about it – we’d love to help!
